Mercer Island Presbyterian Church Foundation
June 5th, 2008

The Mikkelborg firm takes note of Mercer Island Presbyterian Church Foundation, which is the endowment fund for the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church that was established back in 1991. 100% of the MIPC Foundation’s income goes to support the church's mission projects.

In the past year, MIPC Foundation funds were donated to Asa Mercer Middle School in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle to help fund their Readers and Writers Workshop Program developed at Columbia University.

Asa Mercer Middle School is a school of 700 or so sixth through eighth grade students. To improve reading skills and to enhance the education of the students, many of whom come from minority and lower income families, the teachers over the last several years have learned about and studied the Readers and Writers Workshop Program.

Many church members have volunteered to be tutors to help out the Program.  From this involvement, the church realized the school suffered from a severe shortage of books.

After bringing awareness of this need to the church, the MIPC Foundation funded a gift to Asa Mercer that the middle school was able to use to purchase approximately 200 books per classroom.

According to staff, the reading and writing classrooms are now abuzz with energy. Classroom libraries are full of engaging books that kids clamor for. If asked about their reading, the kids will often name their favorite authors and characters. Every book a student reads leads him or her to another book, to another adventure in reading, and to another step on the path towards a life of both reading for purpose and reading for pleasure.

Tom Pedreira, an attorney with the Mikkelborg firm, has volunteered his time to serve as chairman of the MIPC Foundation since 2005.
